8 Fun Virtual Team Building Activities That Your Employees Will Love

Team building is more important than ever right now to bring employees together so they feel motivated, productive and connected to each other. After all, a team that plays together stays together! And, as Henry Ford once said: “If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself.”

Just because you may not be together physically right now, that doesn’t mean you can’t still run an awesome team building event! Need a little inspiration? Then here are our top 8 virtual team building event ideas that your employees will LOVE:

1. Favorites

Favorites is a simple game and a good way to start your virtual team building event. It gives your team members the opportunity to see what they have in common. It’s really easy and there’s no right or wrong, so it’s a great ice breaker for your event!

First, you need to assign a topic, such as ‘favorite thing about team work’ or ‘favorite thing about working at your company’. Then go around the group and have them all answer.

2. Escape Room

Escape rooms are growing in popularity and now you can do so many different ones online! Trying to figure out the clues and puzzles so your team can exit the room before the timer runs out is not only exciting and fun, but it’s also a great team building activity for your event.

Team members will need to work together and each play their part in solving the puzzle so you can escape the room on time! With so many different themes, there’s something for everyone. Here’s a roundup of the best online escape rooms for some inspiration!

3. Scavenger Hunt

Virtual scavenger hunts are so much fun and a good way to help people get to know each other better and have a talking point at your virtual team building event. Each team / person needs to come up with a list of around 10 items to submit to the group. Make the game as interesting as possible by choosing items which come under categories like ‘something you made’, ‘your favorite (item e.g. mug / picture)’ or ‘something you’ve owned since college’.

Each team takes turns in giving their list to the other team/s or people and then judging the results.  Set a timer for how long it should take each person / team to retrieve the items. 3 minutes works well for a list of 10 items. The first team / person to retrieve all of the items wins!

4. Silver Lining

This is a really interesting one for your virtual team building event! This exercise encourages people to turn negatives into positives (the silver lining), helping them see what they have learned from the experience.

Your group needs to be paired up. Then, one of the pair shares something negative that happened to them in the past. After that, the other team member retells the same story while highlighting the positive aspects of the experience. Partners should switch roles after talking about each issue.

5. Truth or Lie

This game is most interesting when played with around 8-10 people. Each person needs to state three facts about themselves, but one needs to be a lie. The rest of the group need to work out which facts are true and which is a lie.

This game is an ideal virtual team building event activity as it helps everyone get to know each other better and challenge any preconceived judgments that may exist.

6. Suddenly

This is a good way to teach your team to think and act quickly when something unexpected happens at work. It works really well at a virtual team building event!

You’ll need a group of four or more. You can start the game by narrating the first three lines of a story. After you’ve finished, say ‘suddenly’ and the next person needs to continue the story! Each person needs to make up the next three sentences on the spot and then pass it on. You’re likely to create a really weird and wonderful story together and have a good laugh at the same time!

7. Personality Types

A great way of encouraging team bonding is by having your team members find out their personality type in advance of your team building event e.g. the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator or you can use a great free one by 16personalities. Then you can discuss your personality types together at your event.

This exercise will help your team get to know themselves and each other better – it’s a fantastic bonding tool. Personality assessments are really eye-opening and they teach people how best to interact and communicate with each other!

8. Blind Drawing

Blind drawing is a fantastic exercise to use as part of your virtual team building event. It’s great in helping develop communication skills between teams and test their leadership and interpretation skills.

This game requires employees to work in pairs – one will be sent a picture and the other needs to describe it to their partner without actually naming what’s in the picture. Then they swap over and work on a new picture! At the end, you can ask everyone to share their pictures.
